Designing a Good Life with Prof. Epley

Monday, January 24, 2022 at 8:00 AM until 9:30 AMCentral Standard Time UTC -06:00

Most of us want to live a good life in multiple senses of the term. We’d like to be successful at work and in business. We’d like to be good in terms of our ethics, succeeding in ways we can be proud of. We’d also like to feel good, to be happy. Are these three senses of goodness compatible or do they compete with each other? This session will cover what behavioral scientists have learned about the relationship between ethics and success at work, and between ethics and happiness. Does being good (being ethical) lead to doing good (being successful) in business? Does being good feel good? We’ll look at data that provides some answers to both questions.

Professor Nick Epley will discuss the above topics, which are part of his Designing a Good Life course at Chicago Booth. Professor Epley was named a "professor to watch" by the Financial Times, one of the "World's Best 40 under 40 Business School Professors" by Poets and Quants, and one of the 100 Most Influential in Business Ethics in 2015 by Ethisphere. He is the author of Mindwise: How We Understand What Others Think, Believe, Feel, and Want. His research interests include social cognition, perspective taking, and intuitive human judgment.
