Do disclosure mandates for sustainability actually work?

Join Chicago Booth in Zurich on Monday 2 October for a research talk and fireside chat featuring Christian Leuz, the Charles F. Pohl Distinguished Service Professor of Accounting and Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

The recently adopted European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) - which go into effect 1 January 2024 - are just the latest example of how countries are targeting corporate activities with more transparency, requiring firms to provide reports on their impacts on the environment and society more broadly. But do these disclosure mandates actually work, e.g., when it comes to cleaning up the environment? What can we expect from more transparency?

Professor Leuz will share his latest research on transparency and sustainability, including on hydraulic fracturing, and discuss how his findings inform the broader debate about increased transparency when it comes to ESG and sustainability.

The discussion will be moderated by Rolf Friedli, ’96 (EXP-1), Partner and Chairperson at Capvis AG. The event will be followed by a networking reception.
